Charles Martin Visits Providence
New York Times and USA Today best-selling author, Charles Martin, shared some of his personal strategies and writing process during a senior class assembly at Providence on Tuesday, September 8 in the Upper School Media Center. The author was invited by Senior English teacher, Rae Avery, to discuss his latest novel, The Water Keeper, which was part of the Senior summer reading assignment. Mrs. Avery taught two of his sons, Charles and John T., who graduated from Providence, and is currently teaching Rives, a senior who will graduate this year. Mrs. Avery stated, “I love that the students read a regional author this year as well as a novel written by a Providence parent. Personally, I have known the Martin family for many years and I am thrilled with Martin’s success. I cannot wait to read book two of this trilogy and hopefully, the students will continue reading the story as well.”
For almost 45 minutes Martin presented to Seniors his passion and process for writing. Students asked some intriguing questions and he was very candid about how he found inspiration for his stories, character development, and research conducted for the book which included traveling to Key West and up the entire coast of Florida by boat. Most will agree that once you pick up and start reading a Charles Martin novel, you cannot put it down. His stories touch the heart and soul of his readers and are especially relevant to those who love and have lived in the South.
In 2017, a major motion picture was made about his novel, “The Mountain Between Us,” which starred Kate Winslet and Idris Elba. Martin shared a little about meeting the two celebrities who portrayed the characters, Ashley Knox and Ben Payne, in the book. Martin also gave the Seniors something to look forward to, two more novels, as The Water Keeper is the first novel of a trilogy with two more novels in the works.
Martin is a Christian fiction writer who resides in Jacksonville with his wife, Christy, and three sons. Providence is proud and honored to have them as part of the Stallion family. You can order his books on Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, and most Christian book distributors. To see a full list of his novels, visit charlesmartinbooks.com.
